The NBDB Book Club and Bigkas Pilipinas present Venus in Orbit, a night of spoken word poetry and music by women on November 13, 9PM at Bacci Ristorante in Makati City.

Too important to leave to educators

As expected, the opening of classes has brought the Department of Education back in the glare of publicity once again. The usual shortages of teachers, classrooms, and books are highlighted, the K to 12 program is under critical scrutiny, as well as liberal and nonrestrictive class sizes that accommodate all students, students overage for the classes they belong to, students not yet reading in Grade 3… And the list goes on.
 

But did we expect our country’s educational problems to be banished overnight? What has happened to DepEd’s clever acronym, ECARP—or the Every Child a Reader program by Grade 3—even if we all know such a requirement is a challenge to achieve? What is significant is the public trust and confidence, notwithstanding the brickbats, that the present DepEd leadership elicits. It is a matter of the leadership being transparent and the citizenry seeing the glass as half-full rather than half-empty.

NBDB announces recipients of 2013 trust fund grant
The NBDB is pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2013 National Book Development Trust Fund: Mga Tigmo sa Balagbatbat by Telesforo Sungkit, Jr. for the category A Novel or Book-Length Literary Work Originally Written in Cebuano; UDI(H): Documentasyon ng Pagpapanday ng mga Ifugao by  Lars Raymund Ubaldo for the category Documentation/Codification of a Traditional Knowledge; and Mangroves of the Philippines: Responding to Environmental and Social Change by Miguel D. Fortes for the category Habitat Rehabilitation and Social Impacts.  Each grantee will receive the amount of at least Two Hundred Thousand Pesos (P200,000.00) each.

The National Book Development Trust Fund was established exclusively for the support and promotion of Filipino authorship and the completion of local manuscripts or research works for publication, especially in Science and Technology and in subject areas where locally-authored books are either few or non-existent.
 
NBDB now accepting applicants for 2013 writing grant
The National Book Development Board (NBDB) is calling upon authors with manuscripts for books to apply for the National Book Development Trust Fund Grant for 2013. The chosen manuscripts will receive a grant of at least P200,000.00 each. Manuscripts should be on any of the following: Local history of a province written in English or Filipino; A novel written in Ilocano; A biography written in Cebuano; and Appropriate/Livelihood/New technologies in entrepreneurship.

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae; a sworn statement indicating that the project is an original, and that the applicant has authored/produced the work; a proposal on the project to be undertaken; and four (4) hard copies and a digital copy of the draft equivalent to twenty-five percent (25%) or more of the entire manuscript, research, or multimedia work in progress or four (4) hard copies and a digital copy of a draft of the manuscript, research, or multimedia work to be rewritten or improved upon prior to publication.

The Fund is envisioned to support and promote Filipino authorship and to complete local manuscripts or research works for publication, especially in Science and Technology, and in subject areas where locally-authored books are either few or non-existent. Deadline of applications is on 30 August 2013. Applications must be mailed to The Executive Director at Unit 2401 Prestige Tower, F. Ortigas Jr. Avenue, Ortigas Central Business District, Pasig City.
