| NBDB awards 2009 Quality Seal in English and Science |

The NationalBook Development Board (NBDB) announced the winners of the 2009 NBDB QualitySeal last July 23 at the Discovery Suites in Pasig City. Vibal PublishingHouse’s Language in Literature IV,written by Lourdes M. Ribo and Sr. Bernadette Racadio and edited by Remedios F.Neri, received the 2009 Quality Seal for English. Brilliant Creations Publishing’s Conceptual Science and Beyond III, written by Dr. Jose M. Andayaand edited by Dr. Maeurfina D. Santos received the 2009 Quality Seal forScience. This year, the NBDB alsoawarded a Quality Seal for Design, which went to Salesiana Books by Don Bosco Press’ Science and Life textbooks, art directed by Jasmin Delara-Sari and BethTorres-Dizon, with artworks by Elvin Zuñiga and Ryan Kapulong. Below are the citations given by the judges to the winning books:
Citation for
This year’s winning book was rated number one by majorityof the evaluators. Primarily, it is successful in naturally integrating theteaching and the development of the four macro skills with the teaching ofstudy skills, most especially the students’ capability to undertake an academicinvestigation. In terms of helping students prepare themselves for universitywork, specifically in learning to use English for academic purposes, the bookpromises to be helpful.
The book also gives attention to the teaching of grammarstructures students will be in need of when writing an academic paper. This, itdoes, by providing exercises that cut across study and communication skills.While some activities are structural or form-focused in nature, there areprovisions for the communicative use of the structures taught.
In a lesson, a student is guided through preliminaryactivities that challenge and prepare them for the lesson. In addition,learning aids like glossary, an index, a bibliography, and distinctly markedlesson components make the book learner-friendly. Providing meaningful context to each lesson and unit is atheme used by the writer to weave the parts of the lesson together. Overall,the book reflects logic, coherence and integration within and across lessons.

The judges were unanimous in choosing the winner for bestin content in the science textbook category.
Foremost among the criteria for a good science textbookis factual and conceptual accuracy. This science book has given the mostaccurate information, procedures, and calculations. The information as well asthe references and online resources are up to date. The authors were able torelate specific topics to real life situations and to the local environment. Theywere able to integrate related concepts to reinforce connections among topics.
It was evident that models, diagrams, illustrations, andanalogies were correctly used to develop concepts. The language and style ofwriting were suitable to the cognitive level of third year students. Thetextbook was written with a high level of grammatical correctness.
The authors gave utmost attention to safety in handlinglaboratory apparatus and equipment, as well as utilization of chemicals forclassroom use.
The book has succinctly covered the core ideas ofchemistry needed by third year high school students.
Citation for
The judges were unanimous with their decision in choosingthis year’s winner for the best design in the science textbook category. Organizing information is the building blocks of sounddesign solution. With this is mind, the designers of this book were able toaddress the needs and the desires of both teachers and pupils and it generateda positive response from the judges.
Not one element in the book was placed one eacharbitrarily. Every image, whether it is a schema, a photograph or anillustration, is clear, relevant and has a visual connection with the text. The choice of typography is appropriate for eachparticular grade level. Every chapter, unit or lesson is clearly sign-posted,which makes it very helpful for the pupil to navigate its content.
The repetition of visual elements, from the color-codedcover, the spatial relationships, line thickness, to the use of fonts wereutilized in a very logical manner throughout the series.
There is a sense of balance and unity.
The book’s overall design not only conforms to the basicrules of layout, but also, they have created what a science book ought to be:fresh, fun, accessible and non-threatening.
Aside fromserving as a badge of excellence to guide private schools in selecting qualitytextbooks for students, the evaluation procedure of the Quality Seal also helpspublishers of nominated textbooks in improving the content of the books, whichundergo a rigorous evaluation process by experts from different reputablelearning institutions. The NBDB QualitySeal is one of the NBDB’s initiatives to improve the quality of textbooks inthe country. The NBDB started conferring the Quality Seal in 2008 starting withtextbooks in Mathematics.
